John received a B.S. in Chemistry and Physics from the American University in 1991, where he worked under a grant studying polymer physics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. John went on to earn his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Southern California in 1997. His graduate research, under the guidance of Dr. Bruce E. Koel, focused on the reactions of hydrocarbons on the surfaces of model catalysts. He next moved on to law school and received his J.D. from New York University (magna cum laude) in 2000, earning further recognition as a Pomeroy Scholar and Allen Scholar. Upon graduation, he was elected to the Order of the Coif. John passed the Patent Bar in 1998 and the California State Bar in 2000. |

John’s career has involved time working with the firms of Darby & Darby, PC in New York; Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP in Los Angeles; and Christie, Parker & Hale LLP in Orange County. During that time, he has been exposed to a broad range of matters including litigations involving Fortune 500 companies. His litigation experiences inform much of his current work in providing strategic intellectual property counsel. As a founding partner of Kauth, Pomeroy, Peck & Bailey LLP, his practice includes prosecution of patent and trademark applications, development of risk minimization strategies, preparation of formal opinions, and licensing and transactional work. John has extensive experience developing intellectual property strategies for clients in a variety of technical fields, including oil tools, medical devices, nanotechnology, optics, biotechnology, and novel materials. In addition, John is one of the nation’s leading experts in the highly specialized field of Plant Patent law.
One of Dr. Peck’s particular interests involves the intellectual property challenges faced by institutions of higher education. Among the clients he has represented are California Institute of Technology, University of California at Los Angeles and Irvine, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and Kansas State University.
