Patrick brings over ten years of Intellectual Property experience to KPPB and specializes in medical devices, computer software, telecommunications, and Internet-related technologies. Prior to joining KPPB, he was in-house patent counsel at Applied Medical, a leading medical device company, personally handling a patent and trademark docket of over 400 cases domestically and internationally. With Applied Medical’s generous open work atmosphere, he worked and coordinated closely with engineers, clinical development and executives and thus developed an acumen of in-house legal and business demands. Such insight was also fostered by Patrick’s earlier experiences practicing law at a large Southern California IP boutique, where he prosecuted, filed and investigated multiple patents for a clientele ranging from large chip manufacturers to solo inventors. Patrick enjoys advising all types of clients, large or small and has particular expertise in conducting patent investigations. Throughout the course of his practice, he has rendered numerous opinions and on occasion has had the opportunity to defend them.

He received his Electrical Engineering degree from University of Southern California in 1990 and his law degree from Southwestern University in 1997. Prior to and during law school, Patrick worked as an electrical engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company in their Missile Guidance and GPS programs and subsequently for JTA research, an engineering consulting company working with clients such as Western Digital, Northrop Grumman and Cadence. Patrick’s easygoing demeanor is often attributed to his being born and raised in Hawaii, and Patrick continues to foster ties to friends and family back on the islands.
